Sleep Apnea

Do you routinely feel tired, stressed, or moody? Does your partner complain about your snoring when you sleep? All of these are signs of a common—and commonly underdiagnosed—condition known as sleep apnea.

Patients who struggle with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer while asleep. When this happens, the brain signals the body to wake up and breathe. Some patients wake up completely while others may only move from deep sleep to a lighter stage of sleep. Regardless, sleep apnea patients experience a cycle of interrupted sleep that can erode health and wellbeing.

Other common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory loss

What Causes Sleep Apnea

In many cases, apnea is caused by blocked air passages. This particular form is known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS). It’s because of these blocked air passages that snoring and sleep apnea often go hand-in-hand. The good news is that apnea caused by obstruction can be treated with a special oral appliance. Your appliance will reposition your tongue or jaw, allowing air to more easily reach your lungs.

If you struggle with sleep apnea and are looking for an alternative to CPAP therapy, call Texas Dental Resources to reserve a sleep apnea consultation. We can talk with you about your symptoms and explain the benefits of treatment with an oral appliance. We have locations in Arlington, Fort Worth, and Mansfield.
